Middle-lane responsibility
Why is the middle of the ice the center's contract?
Your state

Why it matters
Concepts earn their place by changing a decision on the ice.
The middle lane is where goals are scored and prevented. When the center abandons it, the defensemen become outnumbered in the most dangerous ice.
Coaching note · Developing
Backcheck through the middle every time.
Teaching lens · Teen (13–17)
Pair every read with the decision it changes, then rep it against real resistance.
Cue: “What was your second option on that play?”
Session dose · 15–25 minutes, with one game-speed progression.
The reads
- Is the middle lane covered as we retreat?
- Who is the most dangerous attacker in the middle?
- Can I attack the middle and still recover?
Backchecking through the middle lane
- Track the middle attacker, not the puck.
- Arrive above the dots before the puck does.
- Your stick in the middle lane removes the highest-danger pass.
Key points on the ice

Common mistakes
Each mistake is paired with the fix a coach would actually say.
Chasing the puck to the wall on the backcheck.
Backcheck through the middle; the wall is the winger's job.
Skating in a straight line on the rush.
Drive the middle to move the defense.
Decision scenario
Read the conditions first — the right answer is the best one under these conditions, not a universal rule.
You are backchecking. The carrier is on the wall and an opponent is driving the middle.
Practice this on purpose
Only reps that are feasible in your practice reality (any setting · 20 min) are shown. A logged rep is evidence for one named learning outcome only — never for another position's concept.
Gap mirror skate
Keep a one-stick gap through speed changes without opening hips early.
- 1Attacker skates the neutral zone with tempo changes.
- 2Defender mirrors backward, holding one stick length.
- 3Attacker stops; defender must stop the gap, not overshoot.
Progression
- · Attacker adds a lateral cut at the blue line.
- · Add a puck and a real entry attempt.
- · Defend two entries back-to-back to train recovery.
Needs: ice · 1 other (Partner) · non-contact · progressions add: step 3 adds full-speed entries (light contact).
Pick the outcome this rep was for. Atlas never assumes what a rep proved.
Support triangle timing
Arrive as an option a half-second before the carrier needs one.
- 1Three players keep a triangle while the puck moves in a corner.
- 2The non-puck players must always show one wall and one middle option.
- 3Rotate roles after each possession.
Progression
- · Add one defender.
- · Add a two-touch limit.
- · Play 3v2 with a required middle-lane pass before shooting.
Needs: ice · 5 others (Coach, Teammates) · non-contact, coach-supervised · progressions add: step 3 adds live defenders.
Pick the outcome this rep was for. Atlas never assumes what a rep proved.
Self-report override
The guided path to Understood is the decision scenario, and to Practiced is logging a rep. These buttons are your own honest self-report — Atlas does not verify them, and views or clicks never count as mastery.

Neutral Zone
Deny the middle, force wall entries, hold a tight gap at the line.
