Designing a practice rep
What makes a rep worth doing?
Your state
Open the lesson steps below to move forward.
Why it matters
Concepts earn their place by changing a decision on the ice.
Repetition without a decision builds a skill you cannot use in a game. Atlas connects every concept to reps that contain the read.
Coaching note · Developing
Master the technique first, then add one variable.
Teaching lens · Teen (13–17)
Pair every read with the decision it changes, then rep it against real resistance.
Cue: “What was your second option on that play?”
Session dose · 15–25 minutes, with one game-speed progression.
The reads
- Does this rep contain a decision?
- Is there pressure or a time constraint?
- How will I know if the rep succeeded?
Adding a decision to a technical rep
- Two options make the rep a decision.
- A defender makes the decision real.
- A measurable outcome makes it repeatable.
Key points on the ice

- A measurable outcome makes it repeatable.
Common mistakes
Each mistake is paired with the fix a coach would actually say.
Unopposed reps only.
Add a defender, a clock, or a choice.
No progression.
Increase pressure once the read is consistent.
Decision scenario
Read the conditions first — the right answer is the best one under these conditions, not a universal rule.
You have 20 minutes alone on the ice. What is the most valuable structure?
Practice this on purpose
Only reps that are feasible in your practice reality (any setting · 20 min) are shown. A logged rep is evidence for one named learning outcome only — never for another position's concept.
Pre-shift reset routine
Arrive on the ice with one clear job instead of five worries.
- 1Breathe out longer than you breathe in, four cycles.
- 2Name one job for the shift out loud.
- 3Name the first read you expect to make.
Progression
- · Use it every shift for one game.
- · Use it after a mistake.
- · Use it before a defensive-zone draw.
Needs: home space · just you · non-contact.
Pick the outcome this rep was for. Atlas never assumes what a rep proved.
Scan count shifts
Build the habit of scanning before the puck arrives.
- 1During any small-area game, count your own scans per possession.
- 2Target two scans before every reception.
- 3Report the number to a partner after each shift.
Progression
- · Increase to three scans in tight space.
- · Scan with the puck on your stick.
- · Keep the count in a live scrimmage.
Needs: ice · 5 others (Coach, Teammates) · non-contact, coach-supervised.
Pick the outcome this rep was for. Atlas never assumes what a rep proved.
Pinch or bail decision reps
Make the pinch a decision with criteria, not a habit or a fear.
- 1Coach dumps a puck along the wall in the offensive zone.
- 2Say the criteria out loud: support behind me, puck slowed, I arrive first.
- 3Pinch only when all three are true; otherwise retreat to the middle.
Progression
- · Coach randomly adds or removes the supporting forward.
- · Add a counter-rush if the pinch fails.
- · Full 3v3 in-zone play with live decisions.
Needs: ice · 5 others (Coach, Puck carrier, Support forward) · light contact, coach-supervised.
Pick the outcome this rep was for. Atlas never assumes what a rep proved.
Self-report override
The guided path to Understood is the decision scenario, and to Practiced is logging a rep. These buttons are your own honest self-report — Atlas does not verify them, and views or clicks never count as mastery.
Where this connects
Nothing in Atlas is a dead end.
