Wall play
How do you win and keep pucks along the boards?
Your state

Why it matters
Concepts earn their place by changing a decision on the ice.
Wingers live on the wall. A winger who can hold the puck for one extra second creates entries, cycles and time for the whole line.
Coaching note · Developing
Win position, then make a simple chip.
Teaching lens · Teen (13–17)
Pair every read with the decision it changes, then rep it against real resistance.
Cue: “What was your second option on that play?”
Session dose · 15–25 minutes, with one game-speed progression.
The reads
- Which side is the pressure on?
- Is the interior option available or covered?
- Do I have time to turn, or must I chip?
Wall possession with an interior outlet
- Get your hips between the defender and the puck.
- The interior pass is the play that hurts defenses.
- A chip is fine when it is aimed, not hopeful.

Common mistakes
Each mistake is paired with the fix a coach would actually say.
Facing the boards with no plan.
Establish position and immediately locate the interior option.
Chipping every puck blindly along the wall.
Chip with intent to a teammate or to space you can win.
Decision scenario
Read the conditions first — the right answer is the best one under these conditions, not a universal rule.
You have the puck on the wall with a defender on your outside hip.
Practice this on purpose
Only reps that are feasible in your practice reality (any setting · 20 min) are shown. A logged rep is evidence for one named learning outcome only — never for another position's concept.
Wall possession under contact
Protect the puck on the wall and exit with a purpose, not just a chip.
- 1Start puck on the wall with a defender on your hip.
- 2Establish body position, then find the escape lane.
- 3Exit with a chip, a spin, or a hard interior pass.
Progression
- · Defender pressures from behind instead of the side.
- · Add a support player who must be found.
- · Live 2v2 wall play with a possession scoring rule.
Needs: ice · 1 other (Partner of similar size) · full contact, coach-supervised · progressions add: step 2 adds a second body — supervision required.
Pick the outcome this rep was for. Atlas never assumes what a rep proved.
Support triangle timing
Arrive as an option a half-second before the carrier needs one.
- 1Three players keep a triangle while the puck moves in a corner.
- 2The non-puck players must always show one wall and one middle option.
- 3Rotate roles after each possession.
Progression
- · Add one defender.
- · Add a two-touch limit.
- · Play 3v2 with a required middle-lane pass before shooting.
Needs: ice · 5 others (Coach, Teammates) · non-contact, coach-supervised · progressions add: step 3 adds live defenders.

Self-report override
The guided path to Understood is the decision scenario, and to Practiced is logging a rep. These buttons are your own honest self-report — Atlas does not verify them, and views or clicks never count as mastery.
