Cycle and offensive-zone play

What is a cycle actually trying to produce?

Why it matters

Concepts earn their place by changing a decision on the ice.

Cycling for its own sake burns shifts. Cycling with intent produces slot chances and connects wall play, weak-side reads and net-front scoring.

Coaching note · Developing

Keep possession and find the middle.

Teaching lens · Teen (13–17)

Pair every read with the decision it changes, then rep it against real resistance.

Cue: “What was your second option on that play?”

Session dose · 15–25 minutes, with one game-speed progression.

The reads

  • Has the defense rotated yet?
  • Is the interior lane open?
  • Is the weak side ready to arrive?

Cycle with an interior target

  • The cycle exists to open the interior.
  • Two wall touches, one middle look.
  • If the middle never gets a look, the cycle failed.

Key points on the ice

  • If the middle never gets a look, the cycle failed.

Common mistakes

Each mistake is paired with the fix a coach would actually say.

Cycling with no interior target.

Every cycle needs a middle option.

Rimming pucks blindly.

Rim to a teammate or to space you can win.

Decision scenario

Read the conditions first — the right answer is the best one under these conditions, not a universal rule.

Your line has cycled three times with no shot. What is missing?

Practice this on purpose

Only reps that are feasible in your practice reality (any setting · 20 min) are shown. A logged rep is evidence for one named learning outcome only — never for another position's concept.

Wall possession under contact

Protect the puck on the wall and exit with a purpose, not just a chip.

  1. 1Start puck on the wall with a defender on your hip.
  2. 2Establish body position, then find the escape lane.
  3. 3Exit with a chip, a spin, or a hard interior pass.

Progression

  • · Defender pressures from behind instead of the side.
  • · Add a support player who must be found.
  • · Live 2v2 wall play with a possession scoring rule.

Needs: ice · 1 other (Partner of similar size) · full contact, coach-supervised · progressions add: step 2 adds a second body — supervision required.

Confirm the intended learning outcome

Pick the outcome this rep was for. Atlas never assumes what a rep proved.

Self-report override

The guided path to Understood is the decision scenario, and to Practiced is logging a rep. These buttons are your own honest self-report — Atlas does not verify them, and views or clicks never count as mastery.

Where this connects
